Description
A uniquely stunning original woodblock print from Japan. There is a signature and stamp at the bottom but I am unable to decipher the name. I found this stumbling through Tokyo on a sticky Sunday and as someone who appreciates deeply the art and craft of the block print process, catching a glimpse of this portrait stopped me in my path. The figurative shapes of her face and legs, the warm tones of the bamboo shoji behind her, as if her casual posture were emanating this warm aura. I have not seen many prints that have captured the beauty and essence of Japanese rural life quite like this one. The way the print has a slight incline on the bottom, the slight interruption of symmetry is another subtle detail that whispers delicately to the beauty inside imperfections, the Japanese trademark.
